Agile project approaches, by their nature, enable a level of flexibility that improve business outcome. Why, then, should governance be applied to agile initiatives? What would good governance look like for agile initiatives? What value would it bring?
Phase gate is well recognized as a governance approach that reduces risk and improves product success. Is it an option to consider? Does it fit with agile? Is a phase gate approach helpful or harmful for agile development? Does it introduce overhead and rigidity that slows things down and prevents agility, or can it actually enhance agile based product development?
Questions such as these will be addressed in this session.
Phase gate based governance speeds up time to market and improves product success of digital projects, and can be implemented in such a way as to not diminish the advantages of agile development or of self empowered teams. This session will explore why and how. It will show how agile and phase gate are compatible and, when implemented correctly together, how the two approaches combine to provide advantages that neither can provide on their own.
A phase gate process model will be presented and discussed which establishes a governance approach that works well with agile development for digital initiatives, improves product success, and fits Minimal Viable Product (MVP) and continuous delivery product approaches. Mistakes and reasons for failure when implementing a gated governance process for agile development will also be discussed.

- Understand how agile and phase gate fit together to provide good governance of digital initiatives
- Learn a phase gate model that you can use today to add value to your agile projects and improve product success
