  • 1.  Can we measure cradle to cradle compliance?

    Posted 12-01-2019 23:58
    Hello All,
Most products these days claim, eco-friendly products, meaning all the products including packaging are recycle-able. But most products may not be 100% recycle-able.
Is there any way to measure these claims? If yes how are these measured?

    Best Regards
    Mani

I recommend you start here: The Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute is a global non-profit dedicated to transforming the safety, health and sustainability of products through the Cradle to Cradle Certified Product Standard.

    Hi Mani,

I believe the easiest way companies measure this is that for every component that is used in their final product they have certification or traceability that this component is recycle-able and therefore in sum the entire product is recycle-able.

It is like when a product is ROHS certified , this means that all components inside it has to be ROHS certified.

Let me know if this answers your question

    Mani -
    Thank you for your question.
There are several options and opportunities to measure cradle to cradle compliance.
Several companies offer a "Life Cycle Assessment" of a product/product line, with or without EPD certification.
    https://www.environdec.com/Creating-EPDs/List-of-LCA-consultants/

This process reviews the materials, manufacture, transportation, use and end of life stages of a product's life cycle and uses standard (yet often proprietary) software for the analysis.
SimaPro, GaBi and OpenLCA are three examples of LCA software products.

For recyclability or eco-friendly claims, in the US, there are government standards (16 CFR § 260.12 - Recyclable claims) that must be met in order to legally use those claims
    https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/16/260.12

For some additional information, you can refer to Chapter 7, Part 2 (Life Cycle Management, Sustainable Product Innovation) of PDMA's BoK
    (pp 268-282)
